Looking at life through nano-coated lenses

Some time ago activist groups created a contingency plan to protest any move by Trump to undermine the Mueller investigation. When Trump forced AG Sessions to resign on Wednesday and replaced him with a lackey, that plan was activated around the country for the next day. Even with the short notice, a few hundred people showed up Thursday evening at an Albany park next to the capitol.

The November early darkness made things interesting photographically, though the low-light capabilities of modern digital cameras are pretty amazing. (Flash was only used for the first photo.) Some resourceful people also helped out by lighting up their signs. 🔦🙂

Across the United States today there were hundreds of rallies opposing the Trump administration’s dreadful and unpopular immigration policies. The name of many of these rallies – “Families Belong Together” – drew particular attention to the egregious Trump policy of separating children from their parents. These photos are from the Albany, NY rally, in which hundreds braved the oppressive heat and humidity to voice their opposition to Donald Trump and his terrible policies. Beyond the creative signs and inspiring speeches, one message stood out: people need to register to vote, and then to vote in November.

Albany’s West Capital Park hosted the second annual March For Science today. While the weather and wildly various forecasts may have put a dent in attendance numbers this year, at least we didn’t have any sleet or freezing rain. For those who did attend, there were many booths with fun science displays, creative and entertaining signs, and stirring speeches by some local scientists and officials. Here are some photos from the day.

Albany’s March for Science was a great time today. This area is a hotbed of scientific activity, with numerous colleges (including the Colleges of Nanoscale Science and Engineering and RPI), a variety of elite hospitals (like Albany Medical Center and St Peter’s), and science centers like GE Global Research and Global Foundries in Malta. So it was no surprise that many scientists and science fans showed up at West Capitol Park to demonstrate their support. While the crowd may have been angry about what some politicians have been doing to marginalize science, today’s march featured a fun group with many clever and amusing signs. Here’s a taste of what the day was like, including some of my favorite signs. Plus – speaking as an English major – everyone’s spelling and grammar was impeccable! 🙂
